Entwicklungen / Perspektiven nach Verlust der Räume

OBW9 goes Stuttgartcity!

(english)

Developments/Perspectives after a Loss of Space

OBW9 goes Stuttgartcity!

“At about 6 P.M., various people collected on the stairs of the Stuttgart Town Hall and spontaneously opened the new Youth Centre there. Soon the old table soccer from OBW9 and a sofa were carried in, and shortly afterwards the drinks cash register…”
(from a report in an internet platform on an action by the Degerloch Youth Centre Club)

Shortly before this, in the summer of 2005, the self-run youth club at Obere Weinsteige 9 in Stuttgart had been driven out of its original location. The building, an old pharmacist’s villa previously made available by the city, was cleared by the police after a six-week squat on the orders of the city council. Since then the youth club has been homeless. The city of Stuttgart has not yet provided a new location for the youth club to continue its work.

The loss of the space, which had previously been taken for granted, had a revelatory impact on those affected, releasing enormous amounts of energy. To draw attention to the precarious situation of the youth club, weekly activities that had previously happened in the club building, like for instance the so-called Punk Café, were transferred into the public realm, taking place, for example, in public transport, or in the Christmas market. Demonstrations with groups with common aims were organised in other cities and in the Stuttgart area, concerts were relocated to non-commercial venues, like the U & D Festival in Stuttgart Vaihingen.

OBW9 on Tour! is the slogan for these actions and simultaneously a strategy for situational space occupation in the public realm. The playfully calculated introduction of everyday objects of the old youth club inventory into public space functions as an essential identifying characteristic, with which new opportunities for communication are tested.

Particularly since the beginning of the 90’s, artists have used comparable strategies, exploiting various visual and sculptural means. The exhibition in Oberwelt will focus on looking at the action OBW9 on Tour! from this perspective.
