(english) Das Stuttgarter Modell - Let’s putz,
Let’s economize, Let’s party - ist nur ein Beispiel und
Ausdruck für eine veränderte Stadtentwicklungspolitik, die
im Kontext einer Neustrukturierung des europäischen Großraums
und einer verschärften Städtekonkurrenz erfolgt. Diese Politik
hat nicht mehr die Herstellung möglichst gleichwertiger Lebensverhältnisse,
sondern die Ökonomisierung von Stadt zum Ziel. Kunst und Kultur
dienen hier als Erfüllungsgehilfen und Standortfaktoren, während
soziale Differenzen und Konflikte kulturalisiert werden. Anstelle einer
notwendigen Fortschreibung von demokratischer Partizipation und Aneignung
des Urbanen durch die StadtbewohnerInnen tritt die Inszenierung von
Stadt als Party-, Vergnügungs- und Konsummeile.

The Stuttgart model - Let’s clean, Let’s economize, Let’s party - is just an example and an illustration of a changed politics of urban development which is taking place in a context of the restructuring of the European conurbation and an intensified competition between cities. The aim of these politics is no longer to try to produce the most egalitarian living conditions possible, but rather the economisation of the city. Art and culture serve here as aids to fulfilment and factors of locality, while social differences and conflicts are culturalised. Instead of a necessary renewal of democratic participation and the appropriation of the urban space by the city dwellers, the city is staged as a party, pleasure and consumer precinct.
Yvonne P. Doderer, Professor at the Fachhochschule (Polytechnic) Düsseldorf, lecturer at the Merz Akademie Stuttgart. Operates the Office for Trans-disciplinary Research and Cultural Production. Areas of specialisation: gender research interlinked with urban, space and cultural research; theory and practice of contemporary art. PhD from Dortmund University, studied architecture and city planning at the Technical University Stuttgart. Has taught and given lectures internationally as well as participating in exhibitions.
