Heike Liss Oakland

Der Laurel District in Oakland, Kalifornien, ist ein Geschäfts- und Wohnviertelviertel, das durchschnitten und geprägt ist vom 8-spurigen Freeway 580. Ein Stadtteil, dessen Qualitäten in seiner Alltäglichkeit nicht offensichtlich sind, dessen Eigenarten (und versteckter Charme) einen genauen Blick auf und in die Realitäten hinein erfordert.
Schichtbilder einer urbanen Realität: Video- und Foto-Projektionen, Sounds, Objects Trouvée vom Genius Loci, zeithistorische Dokumente, graue Literatur und Oral History Interviews von Akteuren, Bewohnern und Geschäftsleuten vor Ort - aus diesen unterschiedlichen Quellen, inszeniert Liss ein Portrait, das ihre Sicht und ihr Erleben dieses Stadtteils zeigt, indem sie dessen Bewohner, die Gegebenheiten und die Dinge sprechen lässt.
"1999 bin ich von Stuttgart Ost nach East Oakland gezogen. Seit acht Jahren ist der Laurel District entlang des MacArthur Boulevards Teil meines Alltags. Dort kaufe ich ein, tanke, trinke meine Latte, bring ich Briefe zur Post, leihe ich Videos aus. (Wenn ich mein Portemonnaie vergessen habe, kann ich beim nächsten Mal zahlen). Cut / 580 ist der Versuch eines Porträt meiner neuen Heimat in meiner alten Heimat."

Heike Liss wurde in Düsseldorf geboren und ist bei und in Stuttgart aufgewachsen. Sie studierte Empirische Kulturwissenschaft in Tübingen, und Kunst in Kalifornien. In ihren Videos, Fotografien, und Installation untersucht und beleuchtet Liss den Alltag. Ihre Arbeiten waren in Ausstellungen und bei Filmfestivals in Europa, Kanada, sowie Nord- und Südamerika zu sehen. Als Kuratorin war sie unter anderem für das Strasburger Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain , und den Galerien Fluctuating Images in Stuttgart und The Lab in San Francisco tätig. Heike Liss lebt mit ihrer Familie in Oakland.

East Oakland's Laurel District is bisected by the 580 Freeway. It's a neighborhood with qualities that aren't all that obvious, whose characteristics and hidden charms may only be discovered at second glance. Images and layers of an urban reality: video- and photo-projections, found objects, historical documents, sound-scapes and oral histories, interviews with the locals: Liss creates a portrait that reflects her view of and her relationship with this neighborhood by letting the community speak for itself.

'In 1999 I moved from Stuttgart Ost to East Oakland. The Laurel District on MacArthur Boulevard is the nearest shopping area to where I live. It is where I buy most of my food, fill up my car with gas, get my daily Latte, post my mail, rent my videos, eat my burrito, do my laundry, run into my neighbors. Over the years I have developed relationships with some of the storeowners. If I forget to bring my wallet I can pay next week, no problem. Cut / 580 is an attempt to bring my new home to my old home.'

Heike Liss was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. She studied Ethnology and Social Anthropology at the University of Tübingen. In 2002 she received her Master of Fine Arts from Mills College, Oakland. Her work has been shown in Europe, Canada and North and South America. Liss creates videos, photographs, and site-specific installations that explore day-to-day life. In recent years she has also curated, for example at Strasbourg's Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, the Fluctuating Images gallery in Stuttgart, the Lab in San Francisco, and other venues. Heike lives with her family in Oakland.
