Im Gespräch mit der Künstlerin Astrid S. Klein erzählt er von Khalishrine, einem selbst organisierten Artspace in Jaunde, dessen Gründer er ist.
Was bedeutet es in Kamerun künstlerisch tätig zu sein - in einem Land in dem der Alltag sehr hart ist, es kaum Kunstinstitutionen gibt und keine große Werstschätzung für zeitgenössische Kunst? Welche Utopien sind zu erschaffen?

Em’kal gibt Einblick in den Shrine und in seine persönliche künstlerische Arbeit.

KHaL!LAND ist ein kreatives Utopia...ein Ideal, das mit dem zu tun hat, was einem fehlt. KHaL!SHRINE ist ein von Künstlern gegründeter Artspace am Fuße des Mont Eloundem in Jaunde in Kamerun. Die Utopie Khalilands und seine Ideale können dort real gelebt werden.
KHaL!SHRINE entstand aus der Notwendigkeit, einen geschützten Ort des Experimentierens und aktiven Austauschs für junge kompromisslose kreative Geister zu schaffen. Die temporären und langfristigen Bewohner des Shrines kommen aus unterschiedlichen kulturellen und religiösen Kontexten und sind durch Kunst und die künstlerische Produktion verbunden. Außer art/wine/coffee/tobacco quarterly; 180 Minutes @ KHaL!SHRINE organisieren sie regelmäßig alternative Veranstaltungen und informelle Residencies. Die Verwendung digitaler Medien, wie Video, Fotografie, Sound und intermediäre Experimente stehen im Fokus.

Tales from the Shrine

KHaL!SHRINE [an artist run alternative art space located at the foot of Mount Eloundem, Yaounde, Cameroon] is a consequence of this utopia, where the ideals of this realm can be physically experienced. At KHaL!SHRINE we focus on lens based media, sound and multidisciplinary experimentation.. We have a small digital collection of lens based and new media works from a good number of local & international artists. In addition to our art/wine/coffee/tobacco quarterly; 180 Minutes @ KHaL!SHRINE, we organise monthly alternative art events, host informal art residencies and community outreach projects.
The KHaL!SHRINE project born from a basic need for a creative hub where young and practicing artists can exchange and experiment, was imagined to serve as a safe heaven for uncompromising creative minds; people whose main goal is to make art while staying as honest to their expression as possible. The space has art as its main philosophy evident by its permanent and visiting residents from different cultural and religious backgrounds bound together by the arts. This is in addition to the absence of galleries and/ art centers in the region with a permanent collection of lens based and new media artworks.
