»Jahrhundertwende« ist eine filmische Reflexion zum Verhältnis von Aufklärung und Romantik, Spätkapitalismus und (Neo-)Nazismus. Zugleich hinterfragt der Essayfilm das vom TV-Dokumentarfilm gewohnte Verhältnis von Publikum und gesprochenem Kommentar. Gegenwartsbilder und Zitate historischer Texte kommentieren sich in Liewerscheidts Montage wechselseitig und lassen Raum, selbst zu denken.

In der Konfrontation von Gegenwartsbildern mit historischen Texten des fortschrittsoptimistischen Marxismus des 19. Jahrhunderts und der völkisch-antisemitisch grundierten Fortschrittskritik des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts möchte der Essayfilm noch einmal die Dialektik einer Aufklärung nachvollziehen, die unvollendetes Projekt blieb.

Die offene Form des Films, der die Erwartung eines »allwissenden Erzählers« als vermittelnder Instanz gezielt unterläuft, erlaubt unterschiedliche Zugänge und fordert ein kritisches Publikum, das bereit ist, »sich seines eigenen Verstandes ohne Leitung eines anderen zu bedienen«.

Im Winter 2018 war »Jahrhundertwende« bereits in der Stuttgarter Ausstellung »Das neue Braun – Kunst gegen Rechts« in der ZERO ARTS Galerie zu sehen, damals auf einem Monitor mit Kopfhörern.

Da sich die komplexe Form des Films bei flüchtigem Betrachten schwer erschließt, möchten wir ihn am 4. Mai noch einmal in Anwesenheit des Regisseurs auf der Leinwand zugänglich machen.
Im Anschluss an die Vorführung bietet ein offenes Publikumsgespräch die Möglichkeit, die Auseinandersetzung mit den vom Film aufgeworfenen Fragen in der Diskussion mit dem Filmemacher zu vertiefen.

“Turn of the Century” is a filmic reflection on the relationship of Enlightenment and Romanticism, late capitalism and (Neo-)Nazism. The essay film questions both the relationship of the public and spoken commentary habitual in TV documentaries. In Liewerscheidt’s montages, contemporary images and historical quotes reflect each other reciprocally and leave space for the viewers to think for themselves.

By juxtaposing contemporary images with historical texts by the progress optimistic Marxists of the 19th Century and the anti-Semitic nationalism of the early 20th Century, the essay film attempts once again to comprehend the dialectic of enlightenment, which remained an unfinished project.

The open format of the film, which deliberately subverts the expectations of an “omniscient narrator” as mediating authority, allows for various approaches and requires a critical public that is prepared “to use their own intellect without guidance from someone else”.

In winter 2018, the film “Turn of the Century” was shown in the Stuttgart exhibition “Das neue Braun – Kunst gegen Rechts” (The new brown – art against the right-wing) in the ZERO ARTS Gallery, on a monitor with headphones.

Because the complex format of the film is difficult to understand when viewed fleetingly, we would like to make it accessible on a big screen in the presence of the director on the 4th May. An open discussion following the screening, will allow for any questions raised during the film to be followed up with the filmmaker.
