(english version below) „Dulce et decorum est pro Patria mori“ – „Süß und ehrenvoll ist es, für‘s Vaterland zu sterben“, aus dieser Horaz zugeschriebenen Zeile ist der Wortstamm des Begriffs Patriotismus bekannt. Er billigt verschiedensten Haltungen ein Gewicht von gutem Willen für die Sache der Gemeinschaft oder gar Opferbereitschaft zu. Dabei werden Land und Herkunft, (‚Blut und Boden‘, wie es die Nazidiktatur nannte), unhinterfragt als einende Größe vorausgesetzt, Bedrohungen von außen, etwa durch andere Länder oder Völker in den Vordergrund gestellt.
Auch Dissidenten argumentieren mitunter patriotisch, aber sie sehen eine Gefahr von innen, etwa in gesellschaftlichen Fehlentwicklungen oder tyrannischen Herrschaftseliten, gegen die sie sich stellen.

Das Pathos, das den jeweiligen Argumentationen eigen ist, berührt die bildnerische Ebene und soll unserer thematischen Gruppenausstellung als Inspiration dienen.

Um unseren Open Call mit J.F. Kennedy zu schließen: „Don‘t ask, what Oberwelt can do for you, ask, what you can do for Oberwelt!“

Die Ausstellung von 19. September bis 4. Oktober wird aus den Einreichungen, um die wir bis zum 21. Juli bitten, kuratiert.

Open Call for thematic group exhibition

‘Dulce et decorum est pro Patria mori’ – ‘It is sweet and honourable to die for one’s country’: the stem of the word ‘patriotism’ is familiar from this line, attributed to Horace. For a wide range of positions it provides an important sense of goodwill for the cause of the community, or even for being willing to sacrifice oneself. Country and origin (‘blood and soil’, as the Nazi dictatorship called it), accepted without question as a unifying factor, are emphasised along with external threats, such as other countries or peoples.

Dissidents also use patriotic arguments from time to time, but they see a danger from within, for example in societal wrong turns or tyrannical ruling elites, which they oppose.

The pathos inherent in the respective arguments touches the artistic level and is intended to provide the inspiration for our thematic group exhibition.

To conclude our open call with the words of J.F. Kennedy: ‘Ask not what Oberwelt can do for you – ask what you can do for Oberwelt!’

The exhibition, from 19 September to 4 October, will be curated from the submissions which we ask for by 21 July.
