Der Plattenladen als soziokultureller Raum

Peter Incze

U.S.A. (Chicago, New York), England (London) und Deutschland

The Record Store as sociocultural Space
Peter Incze

Inherently a sales outlet should be clearly identifiable as a consumer space. However, from a sociocultural point of view, in the case of a record store this is somewhat more complex. A record store–consumer space, experiential space, popular meeting place and mini club–offers many points of departure for an insight into local cultural practices ranging from the origin of specific local scenes through to global trends e.g. the genres of house and techno.

This evening event will focus on the role of the record store as a social space and will trace the development of the DJ cultures in Jamaica (Kingston), U.S.A. (Chicago, New York), England (London) and Germany (Berlin and Frankfurt). Based on these examples, light will be shed on the widely disappearing role of the record store for the DJ and dance scene.

With his mix of music and lecture the musicologist, music pedagogue, DJ and musician Peter Incze will reference his master’s thesis entitled “The Record Store as Social Space for the House and Techno Scenes”. (2009)

Lecture Friday, 22nd March, 7pm
