Schon die in Aussicht gestellten Spielanlässe erscheinen uns als läppisch;
Spielregeln als Zumutung;
die Kanalisation der schweifend interpretierenden Kraft des Betrachters als Einengung;

For hundreds of years we have gaped at art. For the last one hundred years art hasn’t (just) been cinema and we comprehend differently; but we still gape.

Then came liberation: Media art shaped the term and brought with it the promise of interactivity.
It was finally possible to participate and become an active author.
Real dialogue and art democracy.
Participation and involvement.

And then the disappointment:

The proposed scenarios for play seemed wishy-washy and the rules an imposition;
the channelling of the viewer’s sweeping interpretative power restrictive;
the necessity to work through linear structured relationships tedious and bothersome…

The proposals suckered onto our senses; the sensation feelers of the digital hall of mirrors thrust themselves into our hmd-bespectacled faces.

But there aren’t any prizes for being enthusiastic about a machine that can spit a signal at you at the press of a button?

But it doesn’t end at buttons. For years, the ZKM invited us to stroke or tap living plants to produce larger or more delicate bouquets on a video screen. The sentient organisms, connected via electrodes to animation software, were used as an interface.
The green slaves to communication, brutally and repeatedly battered within a short space of time, grippingly documented the question dominant to the hospitalised user public: To what extent (and how consciously?) do I increase my lack of creative leeway through uprooting and defoliating – through destruction?
Does the pot plant represent a sacrificial lamb or the delicate bars of a software prison?

Does a set-up like this contain adequate constructive criticism of the mainstream reality of Second Life and first-person shooters?

How mechanistic is the communication image of the media scene? Do media artists necessarily turn themselves (and us) into large children in the image zoo of the electronic reproduction apparatus?
Does media art really provide assurance about the ambivalent potential of technology? Or does it simply chum up with the media industry as an avant-garde clientele and do nothing more than pseudo-philosophically promote and ennoble the consumption of the new potential?
To what extent, in the context of human communication, would mistaking program interfaces for answers mark the end of the utopia of understanding?
Understanding, defined as the improbable case that it transcends the respective “programmed” preconception of the communication partner.
Isn’t this where emancipatory art only just begins?

We are reminded of the dreariness of the mandatory participation in everyday life beyond the arts. From selector button to vote check box. Sedated by the floods of submissively served, attractively presented morsels from the shallow stream of information-mush around our footrest. The simulation that our television recliner is the throne of the democratic sovereign is complete.

With MKZ\\\\\ in the shadow of the /////ZKM lighthouse in Karlsruhe, Oberwelt Stuttgart sees an opportunity to put a completely new cart before the horse.

With new approaches, propositions and game ideas that we’ve had positive experiences with, or with New Impulses (NI) for New Humanity (NH). Participation has to become worthwhile again. Everyone should get something out of collaboratively created images.
The first International Participationale will do its best to change the world.
