"Remakes" Interview: Silke Hennig. Abgedruckt im Festivalkatalog
Frage: "(...)"Remakes". Was hat es damit auf sich?"
Winfried Gerling: "(...) Remake ist schon fast ein falscher Begriff. "Remake"
Da trifft man sich also seit ungefähr zehn Jahren in Stuttgart immer an
English translation: Extracts from
an interview with Winfried Gerling, Professor for Conception
and Aesthetics of New Media in the course European Media Studies at the Fachhochschule
Potsdam, and one of the initiators of “08/16 – Filmtage Havelland”
(Havelland Film Festival), where he is responsible for the film selection for
the programme block “Remakes”. Interview: Silke Hennig. Printed
in the festival catalogue.
Question: “(…) “Remakes”. What is this supposed
to mean?”
Winfried Gerling: “(…) Remake is almost a false term. “Remake”
actually always means the refilming of a film which already exists (…)
But alongside this we find something in amateur film-making which is the imitation
of a gesture, the re-creation of being a director as it were, of being a leading
actor, of being a producer – and doing this with great seriousness. That
is essentially my personal point of connection.
Question: “So the amateur film, in particular the Remake, is a reflection
of professional film-making – or what relation do the two have to each
other?”
“(…) in that the amateur wants to in every way imitate or maybe
even surpass professional film-making because he thinks that he can, for example,
be more true to his work than someone that maybe produces films in a commercial
context. Maybe I can here look more closely at one project that will be shown
in the festival which is Wotørwoerld from Stuttgart. The makers are artists
who have founded a club and who meet there every week to refilm the film “Waterworld”.
They film in a small eight or ten square metre space and are not in the real
sense amateurs but practise the gesture of amateurism professionally on the
level of the artist. So this is again a complicated twist on the concept of
the amateur, who, to some extent, can probably always be found in the artist.
I find this project in particular extremely exciting, because although it adapts
the sound of the original one to one, the whole thing takes place on the other
hand in very, very provisional surroundings, that are somehow recreated with
very simple means. Up to now, the film has about 150 actors because somebody
new takes part every week, but this also gives the film a certain sense of continuity.
This project is again a reflection of this theme in another way.(…)
(…) after all, the Film "Wotørwoerld" is called "Wotørwoerld"
and not "Waterworld". I don’t know if the makers did that for
legal reasons or not, as legal questions of course really do always play a part
in remakes.
So for about the last ten years you’ve been meeting up one day a week
in Stuttgart in a club, well actually a room, which is approximately 4.5 x 2.5
m in size, and you sit there in an atmosphere that looks a bit like a typical
lounge club in Berlin Mitte or a kind of bar in a living room. (…)
The film is staged and filmed to the original sound. The roles are then adopted
but there are also small “animation elements” built in. The most
simple and provisional means are used, for example, a sun hangs from a fishing
line and wobbles through the scene or small boats are built with masking tape
and plastic bottles and sail on plastic film – like in the Augsburger
Puppet Theatre – over the water. It’s somehow both a fantastic puerile
imitation and also of course a new and re-interpretation. Kevin Costner is actually
in the film like some kind of big boy with an incredible idea for an adventure,
but who somehow gets completely blinded, and instead of setting this insane
flop in the sand he sets it on the water. I think it’s the endearing aspect
of this huge failure which this project wants to convey.
The film will probably be an imposition on the viewer when it’s finished,
but what I’ve seen up to now is incredibly funny and sometimes extremely
interesting to watch. I don’t know if you would really want to watch it
for two hours, but I also don’t know if you would want to watch the original
for two hours.
What’s also interesting in this project is that the organisers bring a
so-called clone of their club room when they show the film outside Stuttgart.
In this way a further episode is then quasi filmed on site. About 70 minutes
are finished up to now. The total length of the original film has to be over
two hours – they’ve still got a bit to do. The filming has been
going on for the last two and a half years, and that is also maybe something
fundamental to the project, this never being finished, the process of making.
This factor was taken into account from the beginning, that it would of course
take ages before the film would be finished when you only shoot one evening
a week. (…)
